Winter League Final match-up now clear
The Semi-Finals of the Men’s Winter League at Burghley Park were played at the weekend, with both turning out to be close-run matches between pairings who were giving nothing away.
The inter-generational pairing of John and Jordan Mayman took on Javan Argent and David Jackson, and started fast, going into an early 2 up lead before Argent and Jackson pulled it back to level. Neither pair was able to break clear, and the match could have gone either way before Argent and Jackson took the 16th to go one up with 2 to play. The 17th turned out to be critical. David Jackson matched Jordan Mayman’s par putt, leaving Javan Argent with an eight footer for a birdie to win the match, which he holed calmly to secure victory 2&1 for him and his partner.
The other Semi-Final was equally hard fought, pitting Hugh Riddlesdell and Mark Musgrove against Stuart Blessett and Darren Fellowes. With Fellowes getting 14 shots this match could have been one-sided, but the reality was different, as Riddlesdell and Musgrove forged into a 2 hole lead after the first three holes. However, taking the 4th and 6th holes brought Blessett and Fellowes level, and they kept up the momentum to win the 7th as well to go 1 up. With holes changing hands regularly over the next six, Blessett and Fellowes won the 16th to go 2 up, and a half on 17 sealed their win 2&1.
The Final, due to be played by the end of the month, brings together two teams who have run into a strong vein of form over the past month, and should be a belter.
Ladies beaten at Toft in the Daily Mail Foursomes
Burghley Park were represented by Nicky Plumtree and Pippa LeSage in the First Round of the Daily Mail Foursomes knockout event, making the short journey to Toft, who are always hard to beat on their hilly home track. The match was tight all the way, with never more than two holes in it, and the Burghley pair produced a spirited fightback to level the match by winning the 18th hole, and taking the tie into a sudden death play-off. Local knowledge proved critical on the tricky first hole, where placement of the tee shot (and distance control) is crucial, and the Toft pair took maximum advantage to win the hole and progress to the next round. “It was a great match” said Nicky Plumtree, “played in good spirit against friendly opponents, and we wish them well in their next match.”
